What Is a Direct Support Professional (DSP)?

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) works directly toward the goal of integrating individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities into their community. By assisting with everyday living activities, a Direct Support Professional offers support to a person with a disability within their home, as well as at work, school, church, and within many other communal settings. They often teach essential life skills and help communicate personal needs and goals, acting as an advocate on behalf of someone who needs help with self-expression and having a voice within their community. Direct Support Professionals are essential to Empowering People’s mission of empowering and supporting people with disabilities. Our Direct Support Professionals may also assist children, the elderly, or those recovering from a serious illness or injury.

What Are Typical Direct Support Professional Job Duties?

A Direct Support Professional employed by Empowering People may be responsible for cooking and serving meals, helping with daily living skills and personal hygiene, providing light housekeeping services, running errands or arranging for transportation to and from doctor’s appointments or vocational services, administering medications, and offering general respite care or companionship to a person with an intellectual or physical disability. An ideal candidate for a Direct Support Professional position should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with attention to detail and the physical stamina necessary to assist with many everyday activities. While it is considered a healthcare job, you do not need to possess a healthcare degree in this field.

What Type of Direct Support Professional Training Is Necessary?

No formal training or experience is required to be considered a candidate for one of our Direct Support Professional positions, just the willingness to love on people. We generally provide Direct Support Professional training for eligible candidates. You must be over the age of 18, a high school diploma or GED equivalency is preferred but not required, and qualify for employment in the United States. In addition, you will be asked to submit to a thorough background check, including an examination of your driving record, and subject to drug testing, as we maintain a drug-free work environment. We may also ask for proof of full-coverage car insurance.

Empowering People will provide the necessary First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and training, as well as Medication Administration Certification, for well-qualified individuals interested in becoming a Direct Support Professional at one of our Ohio facilities. Direct Support Professionals can be found working in our Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs), as well as Home and Community-Based Waiver Services (HCBS) Programs.
